The renewal of the East and Southern African Ministerial Commitment on CSE and Adolescent SRHR in 2021 is a critical moment for political leaders across the region to safeguard adolescents and young people’s health and futures. The new Commitment builds on historic pledges that our governments have made on adolescent SRHR, including the Education for All Dakar Framework for Action (2000), the Abuja Declaration and Framework for Action on HIV/AIDS (2001), the African Youth Charter (2006), the SADC Framework of Action for Sustainable Financing for Health and HIV (2014), the Continental Education strategy for Africa CESA (2016 – 2025), the Maputo Plan of Action for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (2016-2030) and the Catalytic Framework to end AIDS, TB and Malaria by 2030 (2016), the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development (2016), the SADC Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Strategy and Scorecard (2019–2030), the recent Political Declaration on Ending AIDS and Generation Equality Global Acceleration Plan (2021) as well as commitments made at the Nairobi Summit on ICPD +25 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
